The Event

What A Decathlon Is

Ten events. Two days. One score. The winner is not the best sprinter, jumper, or thrower in the stadium, he is the man who refused to be weak anywhere.

Day One

  • 100 Meters

    11.18

Pure speed, cold, first thing in the morning.

  • Long Jump

    6.98m

Speed converted into distance off a single board.

  • Shot Put

    14.83m

    A sprinter's body asked to do a thrower's job.

  • High Jump

    2.08m

Hours long. Patience event as much as a power event.

  • 400 Meters

    50.51

A full-speed lap after four events. Day one ends here.

Day Two

  • 110m Hurdles

    14.95

Rhythm and nerve on legs that are already sore.

  • Discus

    47.51m

Technique under fatigue; a bad ring can cost the meet.

  • Pole Vault

    4.31m

The most technical event in track, an event demanding speed, timing, courage, and absolute trust in the approach.

  • Javelin

    61.81m

    Whole-body violence with a surgeon's release. Keith's signature event.

  • 1500 Meters

    4:42.27

The reckoning. Everything left, on empty.

Scoring

How The Points Work

The Tables

Marks Become Points

Every performance is converted into points using the official scoring tables. A 10.9 hundred and a 60-meter javelin both turn into numbers, and the numbers are what compete.

The Twist

No Head-To-Head

You are not racing the man beside you, you are racing the tables. Winning a heat means nothing if the mark does not score.

Benchmarks

The Totals

7,000 points is a serious collegiate decathlete. 8,000 is national class. 8,500-plus is the neighborhood of Olympic finals.

The Cost

What It Actually Takes

The Split

Ten Training Plans At Once

Sprint work, jump approaches, three throwing techniques, vault drills, hurdle rhythm, and endurance, every week, in one body, without letting any of them regress.

The Tradeoff

Conflicting Demands

Shot put wants mass. The 1500 punishes it. Vault wants elastic speed. Discus wants torque. Every kilogram gained or lost helps one event and hurts another.

The Load

Recovery Is The Job

Two-day meets destroy you. Sleep, nutrition, and treatment are not extras, they are the difference between event nine and a scratch.

The Grind

Technical Debt Never Clears

Ten events means ten technical models to maintain. Miss two weeks of vault and the timing is gone. There is no coasting anywhere.
