How A Decathlete Is Made

The Journey

Nobody sets out to become a decathlete. You get handed something unfamiliar, you refuse to be bad at it, and ten events later you look up and that is who you are.

  1. Enochs High School, Modesto

    01Quarterback And High Jumper

Number 12 under center for Enochs, and a high jumper in the spring who cleared 6' 4" at the CCAL Championships. A 6-foot-5 multi-sport kid with more engine than technique, and the one thing you cannot teach: he would try anything, and he would not quit once he started.

  2. Modesto Junior College

    02Javelin On First Contact

He added the javelin and the long jump in his first year at MJC, playing quarterback for the football team and power forward on the basketball team along the way. He picked up a javelin, threw it, and the staff stopped what they were doing. 49.70m as a freshman, from a standing start in the event.

  3. The Decathlon

    03Ten Events At Once

As a sophomore he became a decathlete, winning the 2024 3C2A Northern California Championships with 6,232 points. Mornings on the track, afternoons in the weight room, evenings in class, the schedule that separates decathletes from everyone else.

  4. The Pole

    04Learning To Vault

Handed a pole with almost no instruction and told to see what happened. 3.20m as a freshman, 3.65m as a sophomore, 4.31m by his senior year at Fullerton. The most technical event in track, learned in public, one progression at a time.

  5. Cal State Fullerton

    05The National Stage

Two and a half years after his first decathlon, he scored 7,675 points for second place at the 2026 Big West Championships, a Fullerton school record, winning both the discus and the javelin on day two. Weeks later he stood in the field of 24 at the NCAA Division I Outdoor Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene, finishing 17th.

  6. Graduate

    06B.A., Communications

A degree that fits the man: he can hold a room. It is the reason the speaking and consulting work is not a side note, it is a second discipline.

"The first time Keith picked up a javelin, something clicked. What started as curiosity became the event that helped define his path."
